The well known “Tibet” brand of toiletries of the Kohinoor Chemicals Company has been very popular among the middle income and rural people of the country for ages. It is the second largest toiletries brand in Bangladesh and competes neck in neck with the multinational brands. Orion Laboratories and Orion Infusion are very well-known pharmaceutical manufacturers for producing high quality medicine and intravascular saline respectively. The Group has recently implemented another state-of-the-art pharmaceutical plant in Bhaluka near Dhaka City named Beacon Pharmaceuticals, which will be the only hi-tech lyophilized anti-cancer drug manufacturer in Bangladesh.
The Group’s infrastructure and construction wing has achieved unprecedented growth. The Group has recently been awarded the 8.4 km long Jatrabari-Gulistan Flyover Project on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis. This will be the first toll based private sector mega infrastructure project in Bangladesh at a cost of USD 130.0 million. The project would entail state of the art technology and be finance via issuance of zero coupon bonds using such a financing structure for the first time in Bangladesh. The Group’s construction and development role achieved another milestone adding a new horizon: Orion Group will be building and owning the tallest commercial complex in the heart of the commercial district of Dhaka, the City Centre. The 37-storied landmark building will be the largest of its kind in the country. ORION has also undertaken other remarkable construction projects such as the interior refurbishment of the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel at a cost of about USD 20.0 million and construction of the New Saudi Embassy Complex, in Dhaka at a cost of USD 10.0 million.
In accordance with the Orion’s vision to participate in the development of national infrastructure, Orion Group has ventured into field of power generation via independent power projects (IPP) ranging from 2 MW to 495 MW. The Group has recently been awarded the 495 MW combined cycle Meghnaghat Phase II Power Project, under a consortium named, BON Consortium Power Company Limited. The BON Consortium Power Company Ltd. is a joint venture of the Orion Power Company Limited of Bangladesh, Belhasa National Corporation LLC of the United Arab Emirates and Steag Encotec GmbH of Germany. Orion Power Company Limited, a concern of the Orion Group, has already established itself in the power sector in the country. Orion Power Company Limited has also achieved significant progress in the implementation of the 210 MW Siddhirganj Phase II Project. Belhasa National Corporation LLC, is a unit of Belhasa Group, one of the leading names in the Middle East with years of proven track record in the infrastructure development and construction sectors. Steag Encotec of is one of the biggest names in Europe that provides engineering services for the design, construction and optimization along with operation, maintenance, management and support of power plants around the world.
ORION’S venture into the service sector was achieved through assumption of the management of the state of the art and one of the largest convention centres in South Asia, the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre (BCFCC) from the Government of Bangladesh under a long term lease. BCFCC is a world class international convention center where most of the international conventions are held in the country, including the state level meetings of the South Asian Regional Cooperation (SARC) organization. BCFCC is operated under the professional and skilled management team of the Orion Group.
ORION is also engaged in the country’s aviation sector. Aviation Management Services (BD) Ltd. is the result of the government’s initiative to allow the private companies to participate in the aviation sector of the country. The Company provides a wide array of services including cargo scanning and handling services to its clients. Following the deregulation of the aviation sector, East West Airlines was created to operate passenger services in domestic and regional routes. As well, Bangladesh Aero Vision Ltd., a member of the ORION Group, has been appointed the General Sales Agent (GSA) of Yemen Airways, one of the oldest Middle Eastern carriers with proven track record.
