The economy of Bangladesh is primarily dependent on agriculture. About 84 percent of the total population live in rural areas and are directly or indirectly engaged in a wide range of agricultural activities. From decades back to the 21st century, Bangladesh has come a long way in the agriculture sector. To join the latest in the agricultural scenario in the global agro industry, agro services, EXIM platforms with international markets and above all, to provide major contribution in the country’s GDP through the right business to business strategy, ORION extensively focused on agro businesses. We believe ORION’s participation in this sector, can reduce rural poverty and foster sustainable economic development of the country. The Management of ORION has therefore accorded highest priority to this sector to enable the country to meet these challenges and to make this sector commercially profitable.

ORION has the following units in Agro-products:

Green House Organic Farm Ltd.

Green House Organic Farm Ltd. is a proposed 100% export oriented mushroom production plant with was incorporated with a view to start an annual production capacity of 8800 MT. The Company wishes to seek Dutch technological assistance with the latest state-of-the-art equipment. In this regard an agreement was also signed, with Panbo Systems N.V. of the Netherlands which will provide all necessary technical assistances for the project. The construction of the project will be started in late 2006.

It should be noted that mushroom plant is the first of its kind in Bangladesh. We believe that Orion’s would contribute substantial participation in the country’s GDP.

Jafflong Tea Company Limited

Orion acquired Jafflong Tea Company Limited in 2004. The Tea Garden is located at the farthest north east side of the country in Sylhet It stands at the foot of Meghalaya mountain range beside the River Douki. The entire Tea estate encompasses an area of 2200 acres of land out of which 800 acres are covered with tea plantation with about 24 lac bushes from which tealeaves are plucked for manufacturing tea. At present the company has around 6600 employees.

In the year 2004 total production of made tea was 252,399 Kg. The company has produced 298,818 Kg made tea in the year 2005 which indicates production growth of 18.39%.

Noakhali Gold Foods Ltd.

Noakhali Gold Foods Ltd. is a 100% export oriented State-of-the-art fish processing plant established with the Technical Assistance of DANIDA. The project processes Prawns farmed under eco-friendly system that are monitored and certified by DANIDA in addition to all kinds of white fish.

The company has a production capacity of processing and cooking 900 tons of Prawns and 1500 tons of white fish per year. It was established with the aim to produce value added products such as IQF (Individual Quick Frozen) and cooked products at its most modern IQF and cooking facilities.

The Company ensures 100% traceability of its prawn and shrimp products through strict quality assurance frame seed level to feed level in addition to fare framing practices. The Company even traces the dry fish to be used for feed making during their drying process so that no DDT or banned substances are used.

The Company sits on the pinnacle of a value added pyramid of an organized prawn framing system whereby 7000 farmers are lying at the bottom in addition to the Hatcheries and feed manufacturers in the middle. All of these stakeholders ensure that prawns farmed under their unique system, do not contain any banned chemical such as nitrofuran and chloromphecols or any other growth hormone.

The Company is already exporting its products to US Market and are aiming to penetrate into mainstream US and EU chain stores.
